Farmentry Nagatsuki IPA : Background
Farmentry Nagatsuki IPA is a 6.5% New England IPA from Farmentry, based in Kashihara, in Nara. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, and is named after the month of September – which is when it came out. Every month, Farmentry brew a different IPA to show case off a range of hops and styles with this beer using hops in the form of Cryo Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe, and Vista.

Farmentry Nagatsuki IPA : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Farmentry Nagatsuki IPA poured out a slightly duller than expected orange honey colour with a thick white head on top that stuck around throughout drinking. There was a definite haze to the body that didn’t clear up throughout drinking.
There was an immediate orange aroma from the beer. Even before pouring the beer into the glass, I could smell oranges eminating from the open can and this beer doesn’t have any oranges added to it! As the beer began to settle into the glass though, the orange aroma did give way to some stone fruit in the form of peaches, and a touch of lemon also managed to cut in. There was a lingering sweetness that brought it all together, it wasn’t cloying though it was just on the cusp of being a bit too much.
As with other beers from Farmentry, Farmentry Nagatsuki IPA suffers from a similar issue of being undercarbonated in the cans – it could have done with a touch higher to really let the hops shine through. As such, while in the aroma they came through strong, in the body, the hops were fighting for attention with the malt sweetness. That’s not to say this is a bad beer – it just needs a bit more oompt to take it from a solid to a great beer.

A decent hoppy beer that just needs a bit more oomph next time around – more CO2 to give it that final push over the line.
