Bighand Bros Anorthite : Background
Bighand Bros Anorthite is a 6% English IPA from Bighand Bros Beer, based in Nishijin, Kyoto. It’s part of their regular lineup and is available in both cans and on draught. As for the name, well get ready for a Geology lesson – Anorthite is the calcium-rich endmember of the plagioclase solid solution series, the other endmember being albite (NaAlSi3O8). Pure anorthite, containing no sodium, is rare on Earth. Does this mean that Bighand Bros Anorthite is out of this world? Not much else is known about this beer though.

Bighand Bros Anorthite : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Bighand Bros Anorthite poured out a light caramel brown colour with a thick, ever so slight off-white head on top that dissipated into a thin layer on top.
It had a classic English IPA aroma, with some floral notes from the hops, with a slight American twist of some citrus grapefruit and lemon notes also being present. As the beer warmed up, there was also a slight caramel note to the beer, coming from the malts, alongside a touch of peppery spiciness, just lying in wait. Unlike American IPAs, the aroma wasn’t overpowering nor overwhelming.
The body had more of the same as the nose though with the bitterness coming through a bit more than expected for this style of beer. With the floral notes from the hops intermingling with the citrus notes, once they had combined with the malty flavours present in Bighand Bros Anorthite, it was tasty beer. At 6%, there was just a touch of alcohol heat present, though it was lighter than expected. The beer finished off with a toasty malt flavour lingering on the palate.
Bighand Bros Anorthite : The Bottom Line
A solid English IPA and while it won’t blow your socks off with hoppiness, it’s still worthy of your time.
