Open Air Breakthrough : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Open Air Breakthrough poured out a dull hazy orange colour, though it wasn’t as brown as the image shows above. I think the light being used from above must have done that as it really didn’t look that bad. The head was thick and sticky, leaving some long legs down the side of the glass.
This beer had a full on tropical nose from the get go – lots of various fruits came through in the form of guava, passion fruit, and pineapple. Though don’t worry, Open Air Brewing hadn’t forgotten about the citrus notes, which came in the form of grapefruit, lime, and a bit of orange too. Open Air Breakthrough was a really nice smelling beer, and with a touch of creamy sweetness lying under the hops to support everything, it was a joy to the olfactory senses.
With lactose being used, I knew that I was going to get something sticky, though it wasn’t overlly sweet in the body. A gentle hoppy bitterness started off the proceedings, but soon after, the hoppy flavours came through to take over. More tropical and citrus notes than hoppy bitterness were the story of the beer, with the pineapple and orange notes being the strongest. The malts brought some sweetness to just take the edge off the beer and helped the hops just linger on through into the aftertaste.
Open Air Breakthrough : The Bottom Line
Though the name suggests something revolutionary, Open Air Breakthrough is more a gentle ripple through evolution – a solid beer though nonetheless.
