West Coast Ultima : Background

West Coast Ultima is a 9% triple IPA from West Coast Brewing, based in Mochimune, in Shizuoka. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. West Coast Ultima is the first quadruple dry hopped beer we’ve had on BeerTengoku, with this beer having El Dorado, Strata, Nelson Sauvin & Mosaic, along with Cryo Mosaic for good measure, hops used during the various hopping stages.

West Coast Ultima : Appearance

Hazy golden straw colour with a plump white head on top that left sticky white streaks down the side of the glass, clinging on for dear life.

West Coast Ultima : Aroma

Potent. Starts off with a tropical aroma of mango and pineapple, followed up with some citrus lemon and grapefruit. As the beer warms up, it tends to lean towards the tropical side with a touch of alcohol heat for good measure.

West Coast Ultima : Taste

A tad rough around the edges with a distinct hop burn going on – you don’t always need more hops in there. Like in the nose, it has got a strong tropical flavour present with mango and pineapple, followed up by a rich citrus note. It’s fairly full bodied, so some residual sweetness lying in wait. The hops linger through into the end with the sweetness also playing off them.

West Coast Ultima : The Bottom Line

Without the hop burn, this would be a highly recommended beer, but with it, it’s just a beer you should try if you have time. Dial back the hops next time.
