Setouchi W-IPA : Appearance
Poured out a deep ruby brown colour with a large frothy head on top that was slightly off-white brown and left a thin rim of bubbles down the edge of the glass.
Setouchi W-IPA : Aroma
Classic West Coast double IPA aroma of resinous dank notes but with an edge of off aroma – something phenolic lingered throughout drinking. Slight alcohol heat to the beer as it warms up as well. Off-aroma pervades throughout, more so as it warms up.
Setouchi W-IPA : Taste
Starts off bitter with a resinous dank undertone of hops. Caramel malt base tries to fight against the hops but once again, there’s an in-house flavour to the beer – infected or oxidised? It’s tough to know as it’s a flavour that I’ve had in a number of their beers. Alcohol heat present as the beer warms up.
Setouchi W-IPA : The Bottom Line
Setouchi W-IPA is a tough drinking beer – it started off well but quickly segued into something I don’t really want to drink again.
