Himitsu Wasteland is a 7% hazy IPA from Himitsu Beer, based in Mie, in Mie prefecture, in Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Himitsu Wasteland is brewed using ginger leaves that are usually thrown away, though in this case they were washed, sorted, separated into leaves and stems, and used them for preparation at different times.

Himitsu Wasteland : Aroma & Taste
Himitsu Wasteland poured out a dark golden honey colour with a light to medium white head that left some thick lacing down the glass. The aroma was a mixture of ginger and hop citrus aroma, though the ginger was perhaps the more potent of the two. The citrus notes were mostly lemon, though a faint amount level of grapefruit was also noted as Himitsu Wasteland warmed up. There was also a touch of light pilsner note to the beer, not enough to detract though from the slight phenolic notes that were lingering in the background, and became more pronounced as the beer warmed up. I can’t say for sure that they were off aromas of phenols, as they were a light peach aroma, but with this being a hazy IPA, I suspect that they were not the desired aroma for this beer.
The body began with not the expected bitterness from the hops, but more of a warming ginger sensation, and it made Himitsu Wasteland most peculiar. It definitely caused my taste buds to reel in shock as if they had been mssold on what was in the can though the usual bitterness and citrus notes did come through a bit later. Himitsu Wasteland had a touch of pilsner to the body, though once again, the phenolic peachy flavour was present and it wasn’t really a welcome flavour in the style of beer to be honest.
Himitsu Wasteland : The Bottom Line
Himitsu Wasteland is not a beer that I really enjoyed and I doubt I will get one again. No, I know I won’t get this again.
