Heisei Jyozaisenjyo is a 6% West Coast IPA from Heisei Brewing, based in Nagaoka, in Niigata, Japan. It’s part of their bottled and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Heisei Jyozaisenjyo takes its name from the local area of Nagaoka and the numerous battles that have occurred there with the name roughly translating into English as “Combat Ready”. Heisei Jyozaisenjyo : Aroma & Taste

I’m guessing the idea of being “combat ready” should have been a warning when I was about to drink Heisei Jyozaisenjyo as that would have prepared me for the onslaught of emotions I was going to fight against.

Disappointment. Anger. Sadness. Frustration. Desperation.

The aroma from Heisei Jyozaisenjyo was one of peach – not a bad aroma – swiftly followed up by some plasticy notes – not a good aroma by far – that led me to believe that somewhere in the brewing system at Heisei Brewing, there is an infection. It’s an off-aroma that I’ve had in a couple of their beers so far, and with some more to come, it’s going to be hard to ignore it, if it’s present. I’ve got to be glass half-full kind of guy after paying so much for a set of their beers. The only positive thing to say about the aroma from Heisei Jyozaisenjyo is that there was a light citrus note to it, but more about that in a bit.

The off-aromas of plastic and peach were present in the body with Heisei Jyozaisenjyo being combined with a dry and bitter flavour. However, the hops brought their citrus flavour to the body, along with a wet cardboard flavour, an indication of poorly stored and/or aged hops that should have been binned a long time ago.

Heisei Jyozaisenjyo : The Bottom Line

Heisei Jyozaisenjyo was undrinkable and joined the illustrious drain club.
