Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights by Tokyo Aleworks

Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights

Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights is an 8.5% double IPA from Tokyo Aleworks, based in Itabashi, in Tokyo, Japan. It’s part of their draft and bottle lineup though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights is double dry hopped, so it uses two charges of hops post fermentation, with those hops being imported Amarillo and Citra.

Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights Aroma and Taste

Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights poured out a very hazy, lurid orange colour with a massive amount of plump white head on top. The aroma, thankfully, was not reminiscent of Roppongi in anyway, but was much sweeter in the nose than I was expecting as I prefer my double IPAs on the drier side in terms of sweetness. It was actually quite strong even when chilled, so I’m glad I drank Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights chilled. There was some hint of hoppiness to the beer; however, the sweetness from the malts made the hoppy aroma hard to discern clearly, but if I had to hazard a guess, it was a lemon and grapefruit aroma.

The body to Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights lacked the bold bitter punch I had grown accustomed to with double IPAs, and also an overall hoppy body to the beer. If you’re going to double dry hop a beer, personally I think having a large sweet malty flavour going on is not going to help. The hops need something dry so the hops can lineup front and centre, which wasn’t the case with Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights. It was more a case of the malts being first and foremost and then the hops lagging behind. A shame really but Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights was not the beer for me.

Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights The Bottom Line

I didn’t enjoy Tokyo Aleworks Roppongi Hazy Nights – too sweet and not hoppy enough for my liking.
