Dogo Alt is a 5% altbier from Dogo Beer, based in Matsuyama, Japan. It’s part of their all year round range of beers and can be found in both bottles and on tap. It’s also known as Dogo Madonna Alt, and is brewed using sake yeast from the local area, as well as local water that goes into onsens.

Dogo Alt Aroma and Taste

Dogo Alt poured out a reddish brown colour with a medium amount of white head that faded fast. There was a slight woody nose to it, along with the expected caramel nose as well. Yet the woodiness wasn’t pleasant as it was mixed up with some peculiar cardboard smell too. The bottle was well in date (April 2018) so either this was a deliberate nose or an off batch.

The off cardboard taste, while expected, was fainter than the amount that came through in the nose. Dogo Alt had a large caramel quality to it, along with some earthy woody tones to it as well. It didn’t sit well at all during drinking. Even more so when it had warmed up and the cardboard flavour became more pronounced. Dogo Alt left a lingering wet soggy dog taste – something I couldn’t wait to get rid off with an Aooni IPA.

Dogo Alt The Bottom Line

Dogo Alt is a funny one. It says on the bottle it’s best enjoyed after a long bath, so that’s what I did. I had a nice long soak, exfoliated, shaved, and moisturized, then drank this beer. You know what? I could have done this with any beer and would have enjoyed it more.
