Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA is a 6.5% IPA brewed at Ise Kadoya, in Mie, Japan. It’s part of their 20th anniversary collaborative effort with T.Y Harbour, based in Tokyo, who are also celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2017. Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA uses the New England IPA as style guideline, with pale malt and wheat malt as part of the base, along with four different kinds of hops too. It’s unknown whether Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA is a one-off or will come back again in the future. We’re not going to discuss whether New England IPA is a style in-itself or a sub-style of IPA (personally, I think it’s just a tweak on the American IPA style with more late addition hops) but it seems the bug has bitten breweries in Japan.

Full on grapefruit and juicy – is this really a style of IPA?

Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA Aroma and Taste

Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA poured out a hazy golden straw colour with minimal amount of head on top – there was so little that by the time this picture had been taken and uploaded that it had disappeared to a few bubbles around the outside of the glass. It had a big fruity nose of orange, grapefruit, lemon, and what seemed to be pineapple as well – heck, as long as Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA also packs in the vitamin C then this could be a medicinal beer as well. There was no note of malt aroma from either the pale malt or the wheat malt either – it’s hops all the way.

Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA is unrelentingly bitter from the get-go with lashings of grapefruit and lemon coming through and lasting right through to the aftertaste. Its bitterness will screw your face up like a bulldog sucking on vinegar, but it does relent a bit when Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA warms up. The body was very thin and soft, with a mineral-like quality to it, though a tad watery so none of the malts came through. Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA ended up with a lingering bitterness and the grapefruit flavours holding on for what seemed like eternity. It was really easy drinking and would be great for a hot summer’s day.

Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA The Bottom Line

Ise Kadoya Crossing New IPA is lip-smacking, face-curling IPA. If you like those, then you’ll like this beer. Is it a New England style IPA? Well it packs in the fruitiness but a tad too dry.
