Shiga Kogen No 10 Anniversary IPA is an IPA beer brewed to celebrate the anniversary of Tamamura Honten’s Shiga Kogen range of beers in 2014. It has an abv of 7.5% and is, of writing, in its second production. Who knows? Perhaps a limited edition beer that Tamamura Honten will keep producing?

Shiga Kogen No 10 Anniversary IPA Aroma and Taste

Bear with me a minute here while I go off on a tangent – but imagine that beers were represented by fruits? What kind of fruit would best represent a pilsner? An apple perhaps. Crisp and with bite. Weizens? A given really but a banana would make sense. Now let’s take Shiga Kogen No 10 Anniversary IPA. What fruit would represent this? I’ll tell you. You’d have to invent one that was a cross between a grapefruit and a lemon as it’s that bitter. A lemfruit..or perhaps a grapemon? Anyway, it’s bitter and you have been warned.

Shiga Kogen No. 10 Anniversary IPA didn’t really excite me as it was poured into the glass – lifeless and with no head besides the merest of rings around the top of the beer lulling me into a false sense of security. I should have known better really as Shiga Kogen IPAs are pretty damn strong and potent. The aroma was the first warning with a bitter, citrus hop nose to it that was so strong it could have been used for bathroom cleaner. Or stripping paint off of walls. The brewers at Tamamura Honten could possibly have not squeezed any more grapefruit into this beer if they had tried. It reeked of the fruit.

And then I drank it. Shiga Kogen No 10 Anniversary IPA should really come with a warning for your taste buds, if not for you nose at least. It is, without a doubt, one of the bitterest beers I’ve had the pleasure of drinking. I say pleasure as once I had calmed down, Shiga Kogen No 10 Anniversary IPA was a very very very nice beer. Lots of grapefruit, which I do love, and a lemony bite to it, which I also love, paired well with the malts to produce a sweetness that soothed the tongue and giving it some respite from the onslaught of hops. It was also pretty dry too, complementing the hoppiness of it leading to a refreshing aftertaste and wanting more. Lots more.

Shiga Kogen No 10 Anniversary IPA One Line Review

Shiga Kogen No 10 Anniversary IPA is a fantastic beer that is one for the hopheads among the readers. You have been warned though.
