Nomcraft Nomclassic Weizen Doppelbock : Background
Nomcraft Nomclassic Weizen Doppelbock is an 8% wheat doppelbock from Nomcraft Brewing, based in Aridgawa, Wakayama. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, with its availability being unknown at the time of writing. As part of the Nomcraft Nomclassic lineup, this beer is an homage to the style that emerged in the 20th century as brewers experimented with combining the malt-forward characteristics of Doppelbock with the smooth, bready mouthfeel of wheat, creating a fuller, more robust beer. It’s brewed with Princely hops – a new one here – but then in this style, it’s about the malt, which is a combination of Weizen, Munich, Mela Red, Crystal Maple, and Wheat Black.

Nomcraft Nomclassic Weizen Doppelbock : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Nomcraft Nomclassic Weizen Doppelbock poured out a very dark chestnut brown colour, almost verging on black when the light was down low. The head was a slightly off-white tan colour, as well as being thick and bubbly, it left some thick rings around the edge of the glass.
With this beer being all about the malts, I didn’t get any hop aroma off the beer – and that was to be expected. The malts started off with a sweet breadiness to them, but then segued into something more. Some light notes of honey and toasted bread came through, along with a touch of caramel. As Nomcraft Nomclassic Weizen Doppelbock warmed up, the yeasty banana phenol came through, blending all the aromas together. At 8%, there was a touch of alcohol heat present as the beer warmed, though not enough to dominate or burn through the nostril hair.
I am surprised that Nomcraft released this beer towards the middle of the year, as Nomcraft Nomclassic Weizen Doppelbock is more suited to the colder months. The 8% was warming throughout drinking, supporting the malt flavours of caramel, honey, and toasted bready notes. With the medium bodied nature to the beer lending itself to sipping, rather than gulping, it took a while to drink Nomcraft Nomclassic Weizen Doppelbock – but that’s a good thing.
The aftertaste lingered on for a while as well – with it leaning towards the sweeter end of the scale; enough to be pleasant but not enough to be cloying.
Nomcraft Nomclassic Weizen Doppelbock : The Bottom Line
Nomcraft Nomclassic Weizen Doppelbock is a solid well made beer – just keep it for the colder months if you can.
