Flora Utsurobune : Background
Flora Utsurobune is a 7.5% hazy IPA from Flora Fermentation, based in Higashiomi, Shiga. While it’s unknown at the time of writing if this is a regular beer or a limited brew, it is available in both cans and on draught. Flora Utsurobune is brewed with a combination of imported US and NZ hops in the form of Ekuanot, El Dorado, Idaho 7, Simcoe, Strata, and Waimea. The beer takes its name from the legend of Utsurobune (hollow boat) – a mysterious circular boat that appeared on the coast of Japan during the Edo period.

Flora Utsurobune : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Flora Utsurobune poured out a slightly dull golden straw colour with a plump white head to it, that had some legs to it as it left streaks down the side of the glass.
There was so much going on in the nose from the get go as well. With this having been canned less than a week ago, it was super fresh – something very important with hoppy beers. There was mango and melon, lemon and lime, grapes and grapefruit, with some peaches and pineapple. It was a delightful mix of fruity aromas, which were all supported by a smooth, yet subtle, sweetness from the malts.
As in the nose, drinking this beer was also a delight with all of its fruity flavours blending together – no mysteries here! No real flavour dominated over another. With a medium body to it, the flavours also lingered for a fair amount of time during drinking so there wasn’t a rush to drink this either.
Flora Utsurobune : The Bottom Line
Flora Utsurobune is a wonderful example of a hazy IPA – I hope that this beer is part of their regular lineup as it’s fantastic value for money.
