Field Ales Pretable

Field Ales Pretable : Background

Field Ales Pretable, also known as Field Ales Hoppy Saison, is a 5.5% hoppy saison from Field Ales Brewery, based in Shinano, Nagano. It’s part of their bottled and draught lineup, with it being part of their regular lineup; however, the hops used may change from batch to batch. The beer uses a French Saison yeast alongside imported Amarillo hops. As the hops can change between batches, each release may have a slightly different character, making Field Ales Pretable less about reproducing exactly the same beer every time and more about exploring how different hops work alongside the brewery’s saison base.

Field Ales Pretable : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

Field Ales Pretable poured out a pale golden colour with a slight haze to it, though I suspect that was from being poured pretty much after being taken out of the fridge. There was a large, frothy white head which kept growing due to the carbonation found in the beer body. There was a steady stream of bubbles during drinking, which meant the head remained throughout drinking. Those with a moustache may find some bubbles in it if they aren’t too careful during drinking.

The aroma kicked up with a clean peppery and spicy character from the yeast used in the making of the beer. The Amarillo hops made an appearance soon after, bringing a light citrus and floral note to the aroma, though not dominating the beer or the yeasty aroma. As Field Ales Pretable warmed up, some light graininess came through, with a touch of light sweetness bring some bready and cereal notes, though the graniness never became overpowering or cloying.

Field Ales Pretable began with a light, crisp bite on the palate, with a strong sharp hit of carbonation of fizz and bubbles. This accentuated the yeast profile, with the peppery and spiciness standing out more than expected. The hops brought a light citrus flavour to the body, though they were restrained and didn’t dominate during the drinking while the malt provides a soft grainy base, with the spelt and oats adding a little depth without making the beer feel heavy.

Towards the end of drinking, the bitterness builds gradually towards the finish, where this beer becomes very dry and slightly spicy. The finish to this hoppy saison is clean, dry and refreshing, with enough lingering bitterness and carbonation to encourage another sip.

Field Ales Pretable : The Bottom Line

Field Ales Pretable is a refreshing take on the saison style, combining a dry, highly carbonated body with the peppery character of French saison yeast and a restrained Amarillo hop presence.
