Beer Again Kurochan

Beer Again Kurochan : Background

Beer Again Kurochan is a 5% coffee stout from Beer Again Brewing, based in Gotemba, Shizuoka. It’s part of their bottled and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Beer Again Kurochan is brewed with Indonesian Mandheling coffee roasted by Pension Funwarikon and the idea behind the beer was to be “Japan’s easiest drinking coffee stout” – a bold claim to make. It is also brewed with coconut and lactose, alongside using Columbus hops.

Beer Again Kurochan : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

Beer Again Kurochan poured out a pitch black colour with a thick tan head on top that was made up some small bubbles. Those same bubbles left some thick streaks down the side of the glass during drinking.

The initial aroma from Beer Again Kurochan was not of coffee, but of a milky coconut one – unsurprising considering that these two ingredients are both part of the adjunct lineup. However, the coffee aroma wasn’t far behind it. The beer had almost a coconut latte nose to it – I’ve never had one, but I can imagine that one would smell like this beer. The coffee aroma was smooth and chocolate with no noticeable acrid or bitter notes to it. Underneath all of this, was a light caramel aroma from the malts, and just a touch of light roasted black malt aroma lingering behind all of it.

As in the nose, the first sip of Beer Again Kurochan didn’t taste like coffee but more of a milky coconut flavour instead. But don’t fear, the coffee flavour came through soon enough and proved to be a supporting flavour. The flavours all intermingled well with one another, with each supporting rather than dominating over another. The chocolate and coffee flavours against the milky and coconut tones all seemed normal without any artifical chemical notes to them. There was a touch of roasted black malt presence but it wasn’t acrid or bitter.

Beer Again Kurochan : The Bottom Line

It’s a smooth drinking stout for certain – but Japan’s easiest to drink stout? I think I need some for “research”.
