TMH. Takao Mountain House (Takao / Tokyo)

TMH. Takao Mountain House : The Bottom Line

Coming to Takao, I knew that I would be paying more for the beers at TMH. Takao Mountain House, but I didn’t realise it would be this much. I guess you’ve got to get the beers up here, and with such poor road access, it makes sense. However, the atmosphere and views more than makes up for it – just don’t come on a day when the mercury hits 35c.

I’ll definitely be visiting this place again when I am in the area for sure as it’s in the right place to pick up a beer after a hike. The whole place is non-smoking and is dog friendly, though I am unsure about the Wi-Fi. Finally, it’s cashless so make sure you bring your card or electronic money with you.

Takao Mountain House Outside

TMH. Takao Mountain House : Background

TMH., or TMH. Takao Mountain House to give it its full name, is conveniently located on the main walking road from Takaosanguchi station on the Keio Line, and the cable car with entrance to Mt. Takao. It opened in October 2022, and is located in a small complex alongside Salomon – so you can pick up some hiking gear either before or after having had some cold craft beers.

TMH. Takao Mountain House : Atmosphere & Interior

As you approach TMH., you’re greeted by a large outside deck area – yes, the seating is all outside and as such, you’re at the whims of the weather. On the day I went, it was 35c and the sun shades were out, helping to stop some of the sun’s rays from burning me – and I burn easily.

This building was previously used as an ordinary private home and while it has been renovated to make the most of its original appearance, and is based on the concept of a “mountain house.”, if you look closely, you’ll see that the second floor still has the veranda of an ordinary house.

There’s space for around 20 people here, at three benches that stretch the length of the deck, so be prepared to share the space with other drinkers or hikers. The whole place is non-smoking and there’s no table charge either. With this being fully outside, dogs are also allowed but make sure they are under control. Finally, I wasn’t sure about the WiFi situation here as I wasn’t able to connect, though that could be because I was out of range.

I really enjoyed sitting out on the deck, just watching the world go by. TMH. Takao Mountain House is thus suited for like-minded people though I do wonder what happens when the weather isn’t so nice, yet people still want a coffee, food, or more importantly, beer?

TMH. Takao Mountain House : Beer & Tap Information

TMH. Takao Mountain House has eight taps of craft beer on, with mostly all of them being domestic beers. The beers come in two sizes : half pint (260 ml) from ¥900 and pint (480 ml) from ¥1,300. I knew the prices were going to be significantly higher than other places in Tokyo – yes, Takao is part of Tokyo – but I wasn’t prepared for this much of a difference. Moreover, they do have a beer flight on the menu, but the price isn’t listed; however, there is no happy hour, nor all-you-can-drink plan – probably a good idea as you don’t want to be drunk going hiking.

They also do growler fills for those wanting to get some beers to takeaway, with containers available for those that wish to pre-order their beers. This seems like an interesting idea; however, I didn’t work out the method about how to do this so next time. The scheme is run by For Early Birds and more information can be found out about here.

TMH. Takao Mountain House : Food & Menu Information

I was originally expecting some burgers here – I do love a good burger with my craft beer – yet on the day I went to TMH. it was hot dogs instead. Not the worst change in the world, though the hot dog sausage itself was much too big for the bun. It definitely hit the spot, but if you’re vegetarian, there is also an option on the menu for you. The menus are all in English and the staff also spoke English. Finally, the prices include tax – and with prices like this, I am glad that it did as I don’t think I could handle any more.
