Baeren Original Pilsner : Background
Baeren Original Pilsner is 4.5% German pilsner from Baeren Beer, based in Morioka, Iwate. It’s part of their canned lineup, and is only available at Seiyu supermarkets across Japan, though for how long is unknown at the time of writing. It was originally released on May 1st 2025, and the label is unique in that it tells a brief history of craft beer, so you can whip out your translation app on your phone to get more information. I won’t spoilt the surprise for you. In spite of this, there is no more information about how this beer was made.

Baeren Original Pilsner : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Baeren Original Pilsner poured out a light golden colour with a massive amount of fluffy white head on top, that left some thick streaks down the side of the glass.
The beer had a distinct pilsner aroma of clean floral hops and light pilsner malt. It was pretty much what a pilsner should be like, though what made it “original” was potentially lost on me and my abused olfactory senses. Perhaps because it had been made for Seiyu, that’s what made it original?
There was a slight bitterness in the front of the body of the beer, which led to a light and crisp body. Baeren Original Pilsner had some floral hop flavour present, with a touch of sweet pilsner bite. Again, the “original” part was lost on me as it tasted pretty much like the Kirin Ichiban next to it on the shelf.
Baeren Original Pilsner : The Bottom Line
A quaint little beer but priced too much in a big chain supermarket really. Knock ¥100 off and we’d be talking about serious purchasing.
