7-Eleven Hammerhead : Background
Much has already been said about 7-Eleven Hammerhead that is seems kind of moot to be writing up about it. Is there anyone who hasn’t heard about this place? Furthermore, convenience stores in Japan are ten aplenty, a dime a dozen, and every other idiom you know of. So why am I writing about it now? Seems that whenever I post about a beer pick up, there are people who ask about it. And with our writeup of Seven referencing this place, it seems apt to write about it.
7-Eleven Hammerhead opened in October 2019, a few months before Covid swept Japan. At that time, it wasn’t a focus for craft beer – just your regular 7-Eleven convenience store. However, covid swept across the world, which meant less international tourists visiting the area. Additionally, with a shift towards online sales, along with cans and bottles of beer, a change was needed. Nakayama-san, the owner of the franchise, decided to shift towards craft beer. His aim? For people “to take advantage of the location’s scenic views to create a convenience store that adults can enjoy.”
It’s an easy place to get to – situated in the Hammerhead area of Sakuragicho. The shop is about a 10 minute walk from Tokyu Minatomirai. Moreover, you can get there from JR Sakuragicho, though it’s a 15 minute walk from there. Additionally, it’s open 24 hours a day, so perfect if you’re staying in the Intercontinental Hotel.
There’s a lot of fridges inside to get domestic, and imported craft beer. The Japanese fridges are at the back of the shop, with 3.5 of them. At the front, are the open fridges for the imports, but we’re not fussed about those. You can drink the beers on the second floor drinking area. My favourite place is to sit on the steps and drink away from plastic cups.
