Kyoto Irotoridori Oat Cream IPA : Background

Kyoto Irotoridori Oat Cream IPA is a 7% Oat Cream IPA – a new style for us at BeerTengoku today – from Kyoto Brewing Company, based in Kyoto, Kansai. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, with this beer also part of their Motueka series of beers, showing off different styles of beer with the same hops. Kyoto Irotoridori Oat Cream IPA is brewed with Motueka hops as the star, though it also contains Sabro hops in the background. And if the label isn’t a give

Kyoto Irotoridori Oat Cream IPA : Appearance

Excuse the glass – I could have sworn I had washed it properly before pouring the beer into it, but alas it seems it wasn’t the case. Kyoto Irotoridori Oat Cream IPA came out a slightly hazy dull golden colour, which was to be expected considering the oats that were in the grain bill. The head was miniscule, with just a thin white layer on top, and fading fast to a few bubbles around the side.

Kyoto Irotoridori Oat Cream IPA : Aroma

Strong lime-like aroma from the beginning, right until the end, even as Kyoto Irotoridori Oat Cream IPA warms up to show some more aromas. As it warmed up, some more tropical notes of mango and pineapple came through, perhaps some guava too, with a touch of creaminess from the oats being present. A light dusting of malt sweetness too.

Kyoto Irotoridori Oat Cream IPA : Taste

Low bitterness but it was also smooth on the palate. The lime quality was the most present throughout drinking, and was a nice balance with the tropical notes of mango and pineapple. The body was quite smooth during drinking, with a velvety texture on the palate, more than likely from the oats used during brewing. There was touch of tartness to the beer, almost sour like, that kind of made this beer feel like a Key Lime Pie – one of my favourite desserts.

Kyoto Irotoridori Oat Cream IPA : The Bottom Line

A smooth, well balanced beer that is worth a try for the tartness and lime.
