Two Rabbits Neko-Mata : Background
Two Rabbits Neko-Mata is a 6.5% West Coast IPA from Two Rabbits Brewing Company, based in Omihachiman, in Shiga. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though it’s also a limited beer with no news about it being released again in the future. It’s the second in their Yokai series, after the Two Rabbits Karasu Tengu Hazy IPA, and this beer features Eclipse, Vic Secret, Motueka, and Mosaic hops – funnily enough the same hops used in the first beer.

Two Rabbits Neko-Mata : Appearance
Slight hazy honey-like colour with a large frothy white head on top that collapsed to about half the original size, and then left lacing down the side of the glass.
Two Rabbits Neko-Mata : Aroma
More modern West Coast IPA than old-school – so lots of fruitiness going on in the beer. Big orange aroma to start off with – though what kind of orange is beyond my olfactory senses. A light dusting of pine in the background but not really a punchy or pungent aroma. Light sweetness in the back-end as the beer warms up though just a supporting aroma more than a forward one,
Two Rabbits Neko-Mata : Taste
Smooth bitterness from start to finish – no punchiness in it and soothing. The hops are orange forward – with some citrus lemon astringency to follow through. The malts were sweet, but not overpowering, supportive but not forward. It’s a clean beer from start to finish and once it warms up, it opens to just a touch of pine, resinous notes to finish off with.
Two Rabbits Neko-Mata : The Bottom Line
A very well made beer from Two Rabbits – not your usual West Coast IPA but a nice beer for sure.
