Minami Shinshu Cask Stout : Appearance
Minami Shinshu Cask Stout poured out a pitch black colour with a thin layer of off-white, brownish head on top that left a thick, oily layer on top.
Minami Shinshu Cask Stout : Aroma
Strong whisky and oaky aroma, with hints of vanilla as it warmed up. Roasted malts and a slight caramel edge came though, but rather boozy.
Minami Shinshu Cask Stout : Taste
Thick and gloopy, with a robust rounded flavour to it. Whiskey notes came through first, with the oaky and vanilla flavours alongside a slight peat note. The stout base was more noticeable in the body than in the nose, with the roasted malts taking some of the shine away from the whisky notes. There was a touch of booziness in the end of the beer but not off putting.
Minami Shinshu Cask Stout : The Bottom Line
Barrel aged imperial stouts are a risky mix but Minami Shinshu Cask Stout is a decent blend. Not going to rush out to find it again but it’s nice enough to have on offer.
