Open Air Lemongrass Sansho Gose is a 5.5% spiced gose from Open Air Brewing, based in Kobe, Hyogo. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. As the name suggests, Open Air Lemongrass Sansho Gose is brewed with lemongrass and sansho, Japanese mountain pepper, during the secondary fermentation, but it also contains kaffir lime leaf. The beer came about because next to the brewery at Open Air Brewing there is a small shop, called Herb City, that grows lemongrass, and the head brewer, Ben Henry, decided to add some sansho to a batch and enjoyed both the aroma and the flavour the final beer had. Finally, Open Air Lemongrass Sansho Gose is brewed with Motueka hops.

Open Air Lemongrass Sansho Gose poured out a slightly hazy light golden straw and had a thin white head on top, though it faded very quickly to a few bubbles around the edge of the glass.

Starts off with a piquant lemon nose, which then moves into a spicy peppery nose with some hints of floral notes and grape. As Open Air Lemongrass Sansho Gose warms up, a touch of sourness becomes present, but not overpowering.

As in the nose, Open Air Lemongrass Sansho Gose begins with a sharp citrus flavour, and then moves towards a softer lemon flavour with some hints of peppery spiciness. There is a touch of sourness in the body that becomes more pronounced as the beer warms up. Lingering heat, with a touch of numbness on the lips.
