Open Air Paper Dragon is an 7.5% double IPA from Open Air Brewing, based in Kobe, in Hyogo, Japan. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though in terms of availability, it is unknown at the time of writing. Open Air Paper Dragon is brewed using El Dorado, Trident Salvo, Trident, and Cryo Mosaic hops and uses Golden Promise, Golden Naked Oats, and Crystal Maple malts for a base.

Open Air Paper Dragon : Aroma & Taste

This was my second attempt at drinking Open Air Paper Dragon because when I went to the taproom in Kobe, it was my first beer to order; however, the keg kicked. Even though there was beer in the glass, I’d hazard a guess at two-thirds, the staff promptly poured it down the sink – perhaps it had the dregs of yeast proteins and stuff in the bottom, or maybe they just didn’t want to give me a beer. Knowing though that I could buy a couple of cans to take away softened the blow a little bit though.

Open Air Paper Dragon poured out a hazy golden amber straw amber colour with a large plump white head on top that left some thick streaks down the side. In terms of aroma, it was a light tropical and citrus mix of pineapple and oranges, along with lemons and mango, that were interspersed with just a light malt sweetness to detract from the hops. Not a powerful or cloying sweetness but just enough to let you know that there is something else going on in Open Air Paper Dragon. As the beer warmed up, Open Air Paper Dragon presented a low alcohol heat, again, enough to know there is alcohol in the beer.

The body to Open Air Paper Dragon started off with a smooth and balanced bitterness that segued into a tropical and citrus flavour that lasted throughout drinking. That tropical and citrus flavour was the same as the nose – so pineapple and mango along with lemon and orange – and again, the body presented a light to medium sweetness to cut against the hops and bitterness. The alcohol came through again once Open Air Paper Dragon had warmed up, leaving a slight heat on the palate but not a burning sensation.

Open Air Paper Dragon : The Bottom Line

Open Air Paper Dragon is solid double IPA but could do with being a touch lighter and less sweet for me.
