North Island Sunny Day Lager

North Island Sunny Day is a 5% American lager from North Island Beer, based in Ebetsu, in Hokkaido. It’s part of their seasonal lineup though at the time of writing, it seems to be part of their winter lineup – unusual for a lager to be a winter seasonal but who are we to argue when we like drinking imperial stouts in the heat of summer. North Island Sunny Day is brewed using Sultana hops and Ireks pilsner malt.

North Island Sunny Day : Aroma & Taste

North Island Sunny Day poured out a clear golden honey colour with a fluffy white head on top that clung to the side of the glass throughout drinking – pretty typical it seems for an American lager. The aroma was an unusual pineapple note at first with some citrus notes of lemon and lime coming along once North Island Sunny Day had warmed up somewhat. Though North Island Sunny Day is an American lager, I didn’t pick up any of the “unique” qualities that some of the representative beers from that style, that is, the buttery, sulphur flavours that seems to be pervasive.

The body was crisp and light from start to finish, with North Island Sunny Day showing off the pineapple and citrus notes from the Sultana hops. The hops were restrained in comparison to a pale ale or an IPA, but it made a good change from the traditional noble hop flavours found in most lagers around the world. North Island Sunny Day had a touch of bitterness but nothing that came close to a pale ale; however, it was more noticeable as the beer warmed up. There was light pilsner sweetness to the body that came through more as the beer warmed up, but thankfully there were no off flavours to the beer.

North Island Sunny Day : The Bottom Line

North Island Sunny Day is a nice little twist on a style that doesn’t have a good reputation though the price may put people off.
