Daisen G Amabie is a 7% sour weiss from Kumezakura Shuzo, based in Tottori, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition range, and can be found in both bottles and on draught, though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. Kumezakura Shuzo took their flagship weizen wort and made it into a high concentration, which is then fermented with lactic acid bacteria, and then boiled in a kettle. A special sour beer fermented with weizen yeast and dry-hopped with imported US Mosaic and Citra hops.

Daisen G AmabieDaisen G Amabie Aroma and Taste

Daisen G Amabie poured out a slight golden yellow colour with a large amount of frothy white head on top. Why am I using an IPA glass you might ask? I was being lazy and this was the closest glass I had to hand that was clean. And boy, was that a good choice to make. The sour, lactic acid pungency was evident from the start, but then the hops brought a tropical fruitiness to the body that reminded me a slightly sour pineapple and mango flavour, interspersed with some lemon flavours to boot. Once Daisen G Amabie had warmed up, there was an ever-so-slight banana phenolic flavour to the beer – nothing potent because the sour notes won out on that one – but it was noticeable.

The body to Daisen G Amabie was light, if not a little bit thin, but it was a refreshing combination with the tanginess of the beer. The sour lactic acid flavour was prominent from start to finish, along with the tropical fruitiness from the hops. Pineapple and mango dominated the hop profile, with the lemon just sneaking in as Daisen G Amabie warmed up. Daisen G Amabie wasn’t that sweet either, with just a hint of wheat sweetness eking through the interesting concoction of flavours. Once Daisen G Amabie had warmed up, the banana phenols were a little more pronounced but not enough to dominate over anything else. The beer finished off with a subtle tartness that didn’t stay for long.

Daisen G Amabie The Bottom Line

Daisen G Amabie is a delicious twist and would be perfect on a hot summer’s day.
