2nd Story Imperial Choco Raspberry is a 7.5% imperial stout from 2nd Story Ale, based in Tokushima, in Shikoku, Japan. It’s part of their draught and bottled lineup, though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. As the name suggests, 2nd Story Imperial Choco Raspberry is brewed using raspberries, with the base beer being brewed first and then, after letting it age, blending it with two other, unknown, beers and then aged once again with roasted cacao nibs.
2nd Story Imperial Choco Raspberry Aroma and Taste
2nd Story Imperial Choco Raspberry poured out a pitch black colour with a fairly minimal amount of head on top, which faded to a few bubbles around the side of the glass, leaving an oily slick on top. The aroma was a really interesting one as surprisingly, the raspberries were the first aroma to come through. However, not wanting to miss out, the chocolate aroma soon followed, and was more of a bitter, dark chocolate one than of a milky aroma. The malts brought a light toffee aroma to the beer, but I was more than surprised in reality with how the raspberry aroma managed to persist, even when 2nd Story Imperial Choco Raspberry was at room temperature.
2nd Story Imperial Choco Raspberry started off with a smooth, roasted chocolate flavour, that was once again, a bitter, dark one, though the raspberries did cut through it to balance out the bitterness from the chocolate. That’s not to say it was a strong bitter flavour, but it was certainly different from ones I have had. The malts brought a light dusting of acridity to the mix once 2nd Story Imperial Choco Raspberry had warmed up, though it was rather muted, it was present. As 2nd Story Imperial Choco Raspberry warmed up, it didn’t seem to develop much more, though the body did get a thicker and helped support the flavours some more. This meant the aftertaste was more pronounced in terms of chocolate and raspberry.
