Kyoto Beer Wasabi Salt Gose is a 4.5% gose from Kyoto Chabeer Brewing Company, based in Kyoto, in Japan. It’s part of their bottled and draft lineup, though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. As the name suggests, Kyoto Beer Wasabi Salt Gose is brewed using wasabi salt – a new combination for a beer as traditional in Japan, breweries would use the actual root of the wasabi plant. Wasabi salt involves the mixing of dried wasabi powder with salt though what kind of salt – sea salt, rock salt, etc – is unknown.

Kyoto Beer Wasabi Salt Gose poured out a light golden colour with a thin amount of white head on top that faded to leave a few bubbles around the side of the glass, and some streaks across the top of the beer. Even though the name of this beer includes wasabi, there isn’t your usual nasal punch of spice or heat that is often associated with wasabi. It’s a lot smoother, and allows a more of the saltiness from the beer to come through. Once Kyoto Beer Wasabi Salt Gose had warmed up, there was a tad of the expected wasabi-ness that came through, along with some of the malt sweetness, but even that was more muted than expected.
For those wondering about the wasabi heat, there wasn’t actually any potent kick to the taste buds from it – it was all very smooth, and well rounded, with some saltiness in the body. Like in the nose, once Kyoto Beer Wasabi Salt Gose had warmed up, there was a faint flavour of wasabi going on that helped to bring out some of the sweetness from the malts. Kyoto Beer Wasabi Salt Gose finished off with a lingering salt sourness and a light dusting of sweetness from the malts.
