West Coast The Trial DDH is a 6% hazy IPA from West Coast Brewing, based in Mochimune, in Shizuoka, Japan. West Coast The Trial DDH is part of their draught and canned lineup, though its availability at the time of writing is unknown. West Coast The Trial DDH is also part of the West Coast Brewing “The Trial” lineup, where the brewery tries different hop utilisation profiles to bring out more flavours from the hops with West Coast The Trial DDH using Motueka hops.

West Coast The Trial DDH Aroma and Taste

West Coast The Trial DDH poured out a hazy, light golden orange colour with a plump white head on top that left sticky white streaks down the side of the glass throughout drinking. The aroma coming off the beer was a thicky, mango and pineapple aroma with some citrus notes of lemon and lime coming through. Once West Coast The Trial DDH had warmed up, there was an aroma of orange and a malt sweetness that came through. All of the aromas were in nice balance with one another and reminded me of something akin to a tropical fruit juice.

The body had a smooth bitterness to it that was neither overpowering or unwelcome. It did continue on throughout drinking; however, it was more about the flavours from the hops that was enjoyable. The Motueka hops brought an eclectic mix of orange, lemon, lime, mango, and pineapple flavours, with a thick, sticky body to support them. Thankfully, the sweetness from the malts was just strong enough to be present, but not enough to be sickly sweet. West Coast The Trial DDH finished off with a lingering fruitiness that was the same as the body, with a slight sticky residue on the palate.

West Coast The Trial DDH The Bottom Line

I’m glad I got West Coast The Trial DDH fresh as it was delicious. More fresh beers like this please!
