Kyoto Sunset Juice is a 4.5% Belgian sour from Kyoto Brewing Company, based in Kyoto, in Kyoto prefecture, in Japan. It’s part of their spring lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap at various places in Japan. Its Japanese name is “夕焼けの雫” which translates to “drops of sunset” and is brewed using hibiscus and dried orange mikan peel.

Kyoto Sunset Juice Aroma and Taste

Kyoto Sunset Juice poured out a light pinkish colour and a thin white head on top – I guess the pinkish colour was from the usage of hibiscus in the beer? Kyoto Sunset Juice had a gentle kick of sourness to it, along with a faint floral and orange aroma to it – all nicely balanced and no overpowering sourness or tartness from either the sour aspect of the beer or from the orange used during the making of the beer. Hops? Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Why? None were used in the making of this beer.

The body was tart and sour, but felt fresh and restrained. Kyoto Sunset Juice isn’t an offensive or bold beer, but what do you expect from a brewery in a city that is known for being the more restrained and delicate side. The orange was subtle and pleasant, with a sourness that wasn’t going to destroy your insides like some do. The hibiscus brought a light floral flavour to the beer, that contrasted against the orange with a cranberry-like flavour to it.

Kyoto Sunset Juice The Bottom Line

Kyoto Sunset Juice is a nice restrained fruited sour that I would happily drink more than one of.
