Ise Kadoya Off The Hook is a 6.5% West Coast IPA from Ise Kadoya, based in Mie, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition series and can be found in both bottles and on tap at a selection of places across Japan. The name stems from the American slang for meaning “brilliant, amazing” or some other superlative that is heard on the West Coast. Ise Kadoya Off The Hook is brewed using Sabro and Amarillo hops. At the time of writing, there are no future plans to release Ise Kadoya Off The Hook in any form.

Ise Kadoya Off The Hook Aroma and Taste

Ise Kadoya Off The Hook poured out a gloopy dark orange colour with some hints of brown going on. It was certainly hazy – was this supposed to be the plan, a hybrid West Coast / NE-IPA beer? It certainly had the aroma quality of a West Coast IPA, with a light dankness to it, and caramel aromas coming through, but they were significantly lighter than the typical West Coast IPA. Ise Kadoya Off The Hook had some floral and grapefruit aromas coming through once it had been given the chance to warm up, but that also brought a slightly cloyingly sweet nose to it as well.

The bitterness was of particular note as it was more subtle than the expected punch in the face. The sweet caramel flavours were balanced out a bit better than the nose, with the floral, grapefruit dankness taking the edge off of the sweetness just a smidgen. The body was also quite soft, with a creamy oatiness to it – a little unusual in what was supposed to be a West Coast IPA. The lingering creaminess played through into the aftertaste, with just a dash of hoppy citrus flavour for added flavour.

Ise Kadoya Off The Hook The Bottom Line

Ise Kadoya Off The Hook is a peculiar beer – it has one foot in the West Coast camp, the other in the NE-IPA, and does neither to off a good level.
