Far Yeast Extra Brut IPA is a 7% Brut IPA from Far Yeast Brewing Company, based in Yamanashi, Japan. It’s part of their collaborative range with Gwei-Lo, a craft beer brewery based in Hong Kong. Far Yeast Extra Brut IPA is brewed using Mosaic and Nelson Savnin hops. At the time of writing, it’s unknown whether Far Yeast Extra Brut IPA is a one-off or not.

Far Yeast Extra Brut IPA Aroma and Taste

Editor’s Note: This review was originally finished in May 2019; however, it was forgotten about and now up for listing.

Far Yeast Extra Brut IPA poured out a cloudy orange brown colour with a large amount of frothy, sticky white head, as can be seen in the second picture above. There was a strong tropical fruit aroma of melon, pineapple, and mango, followed up by a large citrus nose too. There was a hint of white wine dry crispness to it as well – very distinct and forward which was surprising as most Brut IPAs have been lacking in that department.

The initial dryness to Far Yeast Extra Brut IPA allowed the tropical fruits to come through – large amounts of melon, pineapple, and mango, with a citrus twist to follow. It would have been good to have had some malt sweetness come through but that’s not what a Brut IPA is about – it’s about the hops and that’s it. The tropical flavours linger and felt balanced.

Far Yeast Extra Brut IPA The Bottom Line

I liked Far Yeast Extra Brut IPA – shock horror – and if this is what Brut IPAs are about then I can get behind them.
