TDM 1874 Brewery : Background

TDM 1874 Brewery is based in Tokaichiba, Yokohama, and has an unusual connection to the area: the brewery is part of Sakaguchiya, a family-run liquor business that was established in 1874. What began as a traditional local sake shop has gradually developed into a wider drinks business, with wine, sake, beer and now its own brewing operation all forming part of the company.

The decision to start brewing came from a desire to move beyond simply selling other people’s drinks. As the Japanese alcohol market changed, Sakaguchiya began looking for ways to develop its own products and connect more closely with producers and customers. Craft beer was an appealing option because it offered the opportunity to work with seasonal ingredients and develop a wide range of beers within a relatively short production cycle. The brewery project was established in 2016, with brewing beginning in January 2017.

The name TDM 1874 reflects both sides of the business. TDM stands for Ten Days Market, an English translation of Tokaichiba, while 1874 refers to the year Sakaguchiya was founded. The name also reflects the brewery’s intention to remain connected to its local community. The brewery and brewpub were designed not only as places to make and drink beer, but also as somewhere people could meet and spend time together.

Brewing is headed by George Juniper, an English brewer who developed an interest in brewing from a young age. Before joining TDM 1874, he worked at Dark Star Brewing in England and gained further brewing experience in Japan. He joined TDM 1874 in 2017 and has been responsible for developing its beer range ever since. His approach places considerable emphasis on balance and drinkability, with the aim of making beers that have plenty of flavour without becoming tiring to drink.

That philosophy can be seen in the brewery’s core range, which includes IPA, Pale Ale and the British Best Bitter known as BBB, alongside a constantly changing selection of seasonal and experimental beers. The brewery has also developed beers using ingredients from the surrounding area, including Hamanashi, Yokohama’s locally grown pear, and Harumi rice from Kanagawa.

Local production is an important part of the brewery’s approach. TDM 1874 works with farmers in the area and has also developed a recycling system in which spent grain from brewing is collected by local farmers and used as agricultural fertiliser. Some of the resulting crops can then find their way back into future beers, creating a small connection between farming, brewing and the local community.

More than simply an offshoot of a historic liquor business, TDM 1874 represents Sakaguchiya’s attempt to adapt that long history to a changing drinks market. The result is a brewery that combines traditional knowledge of alcohol with modern craft brewing, while maintaining a clear connection to Tokaichiba and Yokohama.
