Iwami Session IPA is a 4.5% session IPA from Iwami Bakushu, based in Shimane, Japan. It’s part of their all-year round range of beers and can be found in bottles only at the time of writing. Iwami Session IPA is brewed using sheequarsar and beets as well, making it happoshu.
Iwami Session IPA Aroma and Taste
The only other beer I’ve tried with sheequarsar is was the Helios Sheequarsar White Ale by Helios Brewery and we know how that turned out, don’t we? I didn’t have high hopes for Iwami Session IPA. It poured out a hazy dark orange colour with a minimal amount of pure white head. What there was of it faded fast to some bubbles around the side of the glass. There was a peculiar aroma coming off Iwami Session IPA – fruit juice, caramel, mixed in with some lemons. But the dreaded buttery nose came screaming through the hops – something you don’t want to smell in a session IPA.
That same buttery nose was in the body too, with it being noticeable from the beginning until the end. The hops brought some semblance of bitterness but the caramel flavours were simply too strong for a session IPA. It just finished off with a rough sharp edge to it, some hints of lemons and pine lingering.
Iwami Session IPA The Bottom Line
Iwami Session IPA is not the session IPA you are looking for.
