Nagisa Mikan Ale is a 5% fruit beer from Nagisa Beer, based in Wakayama, Japan. It’s part of their autumn line up and can be found in both bottles and on tap when on sale. Nagisa Mikan Ale uses locally sourced mikans, sometimes known as tangerines or satsumas in English, during the brewing process.
Nagisa Mikan Ale Aroma and Taste
Nagisa Mikan Ale poured out a hazy golden orange colour with a large frothy white head on top that clung to the side of the glass throughout drinking. It had a subtle orange aroma to it with hints of citrus as well appearing when it began to warm up. Nagisa Mikan Ale also had a hint of caramel and some wheaty notes to it though all the aromas were nicely balanced with one another.
Fruit beers are a funny bunch of beer – sometimes they’re done really badly (Aomori Ji-Beer looking at you!) while, like Nagisa Mikan Ale, they are done well that you don’t really notice either the beer base or fruits dominating. Throughout drinking, Nagisa Mikan Ale is balanced so well it’s a case of “ooh here’s orange, ooh here’s beer” – rinse and repeat. It’s not a bad thing as the tartness of the orange also brings an interesting edge to what could have been a bland beer. It finished off with a sweet orange flavour before fading quickly away.
Nagisa Mikan Ale The Bottom Line
I liked Nagisa Mikan Ale – refreshing and crisp but as everything is so well balanced, it’s hard to really pick it out as outstanding.
