Nasu Kogen Stout is a 6% stout from Nasu Kohgen Beer that is part of their “The Craft Beer’s Secrets” range of beers, which also happens to be their regular all-year round range. While the ingredients to the Nasu Kogen Beer range can be found quite easily, that is, malt, water, and hops, the unknown quality is the yeast as it’s an in-house blend that no-one seems to know what it is. Nasu Kogen Stout is also an award-winning beer, having won ten different awards since its inception. It can be found in both bottles and on tap.

Pitch black colour with a large, bubbly head.

Nasu Kogen Stout Aroma and Taste

Let’s get this out of the way – Nasu Kogen Stout looked simply beautiful in the glass. It had a pitch black colour with a large, tan head that dissipated slowly but was thick and creamy. It’s strange to enjoy the head but it was nice and tasty. The aroma had a strong charcoal-like quality to it though the coffee and chocolate flavours were subdued because of it.

The body to Nasu Kogen Stout was thicker than most domestic stouts – always a good sign to get something that fills you up rather than feeling like a black lager. It had a sweetness of toffee and chocolate to it and it was also slightly creamy. Nasu Kogen Stout finished off with a subtle bitter aftertaste that didn’t linger long and lacked the flavours of the body. After doing so well, it did seem a shame for the flavours not to linger.

Nasu Kogen Stout One Line Review

Nasu Kogen Stout started off really well but lacked stamina with the flavours in the body and aftertaste.
