Sankt Gallen Kansha No Nama Gold/Kogane is Sankt Gallen’s version of an American pale ale that comes in a variety of sizes, all at 4.8% ABV, but the most impressive is the 1.8L sake bottle size that is occasionally on sale. It was supposedly first brewed for Father’s Day back in 2010 though it is still found throughout the year. The most confusing thing about this beer is that the stout version has EXACTLY the same name so we’ve put the Gold/Kogane in the title to make it clear. Also, this version has a white label.

This is the white version that is an American pale ale. The other is a stout.

Sankt Gallen Kansha No Nama Gold/Kogane Aroma and Taste

The hazy golden colour of Sankt Gallen Kansha No Nama Gold/Kogane stood out well from the clear white head on top, though the haziness wasn’t expected. Luckily, or unluckily, I bought the smaller version as 1.8L of any beer sounds scary, even though I would probably drink that much after a few pints in the local.

Hops were up there with malt in the main aroma coming off, along with a dash of citrus thrown in for good measure. I would be delighted if my son had given me this beer for Father’s Day though seeing as he under 20, he would have had problems buying it for me.

Sankt Gallen Kansha No Nama Gold/Kogane (Jeez, Sankt Gallen really should have given this beer a better name like Sankt Gallen Otosan no Biru (©Rob)) was soft on the carbonation and easy going to drink. It could have been dangerous to drink but alas, I only had one bottle. The citrus and hops were most prominent in the body and Sankt Gallen Kansha No Nama Gold/Kogane finished off rather drier than I would have liked for an American pale ale, but still nice.

Sankt Gallen Kansha No Nama Gold/Kogane One Line Review

Sankt Gallen Kansha No Nama Gold/Kogane is a easy-drinking American pale ale that isn’t offensive, and is a good introduction to hoppier beers.

I had a bottle of this kansha beer tonight, and was utterly disappointed. No hops at all, a very bland taste, similar to a happoshu. I do not know if I had a bottle of a bad batch, as normally I expect much better quality from Sankt Gallen.
