Fetish Club Rice Guy : Background
Fetish Club Rice Guy is a 7% Japanese rice cold IPA from Fetish Club Beer based in Hamamatsucho, Tokyo. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing. Fetish Club Rice Guy is brewed with Ishiha rice, which is a kind of phantom rice. What is a “phantom rice” – well I also wondered the same thing and is a term used in Japan for rare, heirloom, or historically endangered rice varieties that nearly vanished due to the extreme difficulty of cultivating them. However, what hops went into making this beer are unknown at the time of writing as Fetish Club Beer haven’t released that information.

Fetish Club Rice Guy : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Fetish Club Rice Guy poured a golden straw colour with a thin layer of medium-to-large bubbles on top, although the head didn’t last long, collapsing to just a few bubbles that clung to the side of the glass. There was a slight haze to the beer, although I suspect this was simply from the can coming out of the fridge minutes before being poured and photographed.
From the get-go, the beer had a clean, sake-like aroma with light creamy notes alongside a touch of the typical phenolic character found in some sweeter styles of nihonshu. As Fetish Club Rice Guy warmed up, the hops started to come through, bringing a mixture of citrus and tropical fruit, with grapefruit, lemon and orange being the most noticeable. Of the tropical notes, mango was the most distinct, followed by a touch of light floral character. There was barely any sweetness on the nose.
The body followed suit, beginning with a smooth, balanced bitterness that was soft on the palate, with no hop burn or abrasiveness as I drank. The rice profile came through first, quickly followed by the hops. The hop flavour was very similar to the aroma, although the tropical character seemed slightly more pronounced; this may have been helped by the beer warming up in the glass.
Fetish Club Rice Guy finished on the dry side, with the rice and hop character working nicely together. Despite coming in at 7% ABV, there was very little noticeable alcohol warmth, making the beer surprisingly easy to drink. The combination of the clean rice character, sake-like aromatics and fruity hops gives it plenty of character without making it feel heavy.
Fetish Club Rice Guy : The Bottom Line
Fetish Club Rice Guy is a surprisingly complex 7% rice beer, combining a clean, sake-like character with citrus and tropical hops, a smooth bitterness and a dry finish, while remaining remarkably easy drinking for its strength.
