Fetish Club Beer : Background
Fetish Club Beer Beer opened in Tokyo in March 2024, but the story behind the brewery started well before the first beer was brewed. The brewery was created by a group of friends who shared a love of craft beer, particularly American-style IPAs, as well as Tokyo’s nightlife, music, photography and design culture. Rather than simply opening another craft beer bar, they wanted to create somewhere that reflected the places they actually enjoyed drinking in.
The inspiration came partly from Shinjuku, where founder Hiro had spent much of his younger working life. Working at a design studio, drinking after work became part of everyday life, with Shinjuku’s bars and nightlife becoming a second home. The group were particularly fond of the atmosphere around Shinjuku Ni-chome and the way its bars created their own distinctive culture. Later, after moving away from Shinjuku, they found a craft beer bar around the Mita and Shibadaimon area that served the kind of Japanese and American IPAs they enjoyed. When that bar closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, they found themselves struggling to find similar beer in the places they liked drinking.
Rather than simply accepting that situation, the group decided to create their own beer and their own place to drink it. Fetish Club Beer was born from the idea of bringing craft beer into the nightlife culture they already loved, combining beer with art, photography, music and the visual character of Tokyo after dark. The Tokyo brewery and beer bar opened in Shibadaimon in March 2024. The building contains a small brewery on the first floor and a bar upstairs, allowing customers to drink beer brewed almost directly beneath them. The interior reflects the project’s wider aesthetic, with neon lighting, colourful artwork and a cyberpunk-inspired atmosphere.
Fetish Club Beer is not limited to Tokyo, however. The brewery also operates a larger production facility in Kudamatsu, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The two locations serve different purposes, with the Tokyo brewery concentrating on smaller-scale production, experimentation and new beer development, while the Yamaguchi brewery provides the capacity for larger production runs. Together, the breweries have four brewhouses and 20 fermentation tanks.
The name Fetish Club Beer comes from the founders’ obsession with craft beer itself. The brewery describes its “fetish” as an intense love of beautiful, aromatic beer and the culture surrounding it. That philosophy is particularly visible in its beers, which range from West Coast and Hazy IPAs to sake IPAs, lagers, stouts and more experimental creations.
Since opening, Fetish Club Beer has also developed a strong connection between beer and contemporary Japanese art and photography. Many beers feature collaborations with photographers and artists, giving the labels and beer names another layer of personality. For FETISH CLUB, the beer is therefore only part of the experience. The aim is to create something that can be drunk, looked at, talked about and remembered, which explains why the brewery feels as much like a piece of Tokyo nightlife culture as a conventional craft brewery.
