Otama Harumachi

Otama Harumachi : Background

Otama Harumachi is a 6% hazy IPA from Otama Brewing, based in Joetsu, Niigata. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both bottle and on draught. Otama Harumachi is brewed with Citra, Galaxy, and Idaho 7 hops. The name stems from ‘waiting for spring’ and ‘spring town’. The name is based on the feeling of looking forward to spring after a long winter and the image of Joetsu City in Niigata Prefecture, which shines in spring as represented by the cherry blossoms in Takada.

Otama Harumachi : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste

Otama Harumachi poured out a hazy and vibrant honey colour with a thick white head on top that left some streaks and patches down in the inside of the glass.

I wish I had drunk this beer before the Otama Yukiyama Weekender as what a beer this turned out to be! It had lashings of citrus and tropical aromas present – lemon and orange for the former, and mango and pineapple for the latter – all balanced well together. There was a touch of malt sweetness lingering underneath it all, waiting to pop out, which it did as the beer warmed up. Unlike the Otama Yukiyama Weekender, I couldn’t pick any off-aromas to this beer.

Finally, the body began with a smooth bitterness and had a medium body texture. The hops, of course, were at the forefront with once again the citrus and tropical bouquet being present. The malt sweetness brought it all together nicely and made this beer a pleasure to drink.

Otama Harumachi : The Bottom Line

Otama Harumachi is a well made hazy IPA that I would be happy to try again.
