Vertere 9th Anniversary Red IPA is an 8% imperial red IPA from Vertere, based in Oku-tama, Tokyo. It’s part of their 9th anniversary line so consider it a limited edition beer. At the time of writing, it is available in both cans and on draught. Vertere 9th Anniversary Red IPA is brewed using Amarillo, Cascade, Chinook, Citra Lupomax, and Comet hops. Finally, this beer is a remake of the Red IPA that was produced in the early days of brewing. Ruby red derived from caramel malt.

Vertere 9th Anniversary Red IPA : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
Unsurprisingly, Vertere 9th Anniversary Red IPA poured out a deep reddish brown colour with not much carbonation in the body it seemed. The head was limp and flat, with less than a finger’s worth of off-white foam that sat on top and dissipated quicker than you blink.
The beer had a pleasant mix of aromas from the hops and malts. The hops brought with them a fruity mix – some grapefruit here, some lemon there, while the berry mix was verging on jammy. Vertere 9th Anniversary Red IPA had a light dusting of caramel tones throughout, with a toasted note lying in wait underneath it all. At 8%, there wasn’t any noticeable alcohol heat from the beer, either when chilled or warmed up.
During drinking Vertere 9th Anniversary Red IPA, I noticed that there was underlying nuttiness to the beer – not a strange taste; however, it wasn’t noticed during the aroma. Peculiar. The body had the mixed nature of citrus notes and berry mix present, with the toasted caramel notes. It was a mixed up beer that was equal parts tasty, but also weird and funny tasting, if that makes sense.

This isn’t a bad beer, but I think some barbe rouge hops would have been put to better use.
