Background
South Horizon Fun guy Fungi is an 8% saison from South Horizon Brewing, based in Kochi, in Kochi, Shikoku. It’s part of their canned and draught lineup, though its availability is unknown at the time of writing.The beer takes its name from the usage of shiitake mushrooms – the fungi part of the name – and also uses white koji during the fermentation process. In terms of hops, the beer has Citra and El Dorado. Finally, it took silver at the 2024 Japan Beer Awards.

South Horizon Fun guy Fungi : Appearance, Aroma, and Taste
It poured out a slighty hazy golden orange colour with a little bit of sediment at the bottom of the can. Not much, but just a warning for you all. The head was made up of large, fluffy white bubbles that dissipated to a thin layer on top.
Dry notes of lemon and some floral notes from the hops, with a slight savoury note to the nose – was this the mushrooms or was it some kind of placebo effect? Hard to really know without removing the idea of the mushrooms in the beer. A well balanced beer though, with some light warming alcohol notes and no discernible off aromas. As the beer warms up, there’s a slight sake quality to the aroma.
Balanced flavour between the hops citrusy tones and the savoury notes that can only be attributed to the mushrooms. While it may sound weird to read that, the flavour was very well balanced, with just a touch of some sake notes lying in the background, underneath the citrus and savoury tones. As the beer warms up, there is a touch of alcohol heat present, but it’s a warming flavour, rather than a distraction.
The Bottom Line
South Horizon Fun guy Fungi is really a fun little beer and one that could really kick off a drinking session. It’s light and flavourful – worth a find.
