Nomcraft Dinosaur Zoo : Background

Nomcraft Dinosaur Zoo is an 8.0 % West Coast Double IPA from Nomcraft Brewing, based in Aridagawa, in Wakayama. It is available in both cans and on draught, and the latter is the version we’re drinking in this writeup. It is an annual release, with the original version coming out twice in 2023. Moreover, Nomcraft Brewing used the recipe of their double IPA “Blast Off” to make this beer. Compared to previous versions this version includes Centennial, Columbus, Comet, Strata, and Zappa – some classic C hops there.

It’s worth noting that as Nomcraft Dinosaur Zoo is an irregular release, the hop list does change. Previous versions used Cascade, Comet, or Simcoe hops instead.

Nomcraft Dinosaur Zoo : Appearance

The beer came up a slightly hazy golden colour with some small bubbles of white head on top that faded to thin layer on top, with some stickiness on the glass.

Nomcraft Dinosaur Zoo : Aroma

Initial aroma was dank and resinous, reminiscent of an old school West Coast IPA. Once it had warmed up, some tropical notes came though. These consisted of pineapple and passionfruit, alongside just a touch of citrus in the back. Futhermore, with it warming up, there was a touch of malt sweetness to balance out the hoppiness.

Nomcraft Dinosaur Zoo : Taste

It kicks off with a dank bitterness that reminds me of a classic West Coast IPA. Dank and bitter, it lingers on the palate and leaves you wanting more. Afterwards, there was some pineapple on the palate but give me that dankness again. I had one big gulp, as you can see above, and sat down. Another big gulp, and the beer is halfway gone, with that dankness lingering on.

Anyway, let’s get back to writing up. In addition, it had an underlying citrus body with grapefruit and lemon coming through. Moreso as it warmed up, assisted by some distinct malt caramel tones to support all the flavours.

Nomcraft Dinosaur Zoo : The Bottom Line

The fact that I ordered this twice within thirty minutes should tell you enough. Buy it and drink it fresh.
