Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout : Background

Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout is a 6.5% milk stout from Sankt Gallen, based in Kanagawa, Japan. Every year, Sankt Gallen releases a special flavoured beer in honour of Valentine’s day with previous versions including Sankt Gallen Grape Chocolate Stout in 2022, Sankt Gallen Double Mint Chocolate in 2020, and Sankt Gallen Banana Chocolate Stout in 2019 to name but a few.

Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout is brewed using chocolate malt and a considerable amount of caramel malt is used. They also actually use homemade burnt caramel. The slightly bitter sweetness is accented with mineral-rich sea salt while the salted caramel added to the wort is homemade, based on a recipe devised for beer by pastry chef Masashi Yanagi..

Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout : Appearance

Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout poured out a thick black colour with a large brown bubbles on the top. The bubbles faded to a thin ring around the edge and left some light streaks down the side.

Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout : Aroma

When chilled, Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout was chocolate forward with a slight twinge of caramel sweetness. As the beer warms up, the salted caramel becomes more pronounced but not cloying or sickly. The malts brought a subtle roasted note to the end of the aroma.

Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout : Taste

Medium bodied with a strong leaning towards chocolate and roasted black malt notes. Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout had subtle bitterness with a light mineral flavour from the salt, though intertwined with the burnt caramel flavour, it blended nicely. The salted caramel flavour was not as pronounced as in the nose, but balanced well against the main flavours of the stout. As the beer warms up, Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout leans more towards the salted caramel aftertaste lingering on.

Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout : The Bottom Line

Compared to other iterations of special Valentine’s beers, Sankt Gallen Salted Caramel Chocolate Stout is a pretty good effort – just let it warm up before drinking.
