41 Beer Shiripa IPA is a 6.5% IPA from 41 Craft Beer Works based in Yoichi, in Hokkaido. It’s part of their regular lineup and can be found in both cans and on tap. 41 Beer Shiripa IPA takes its name from Shiripa being an Ainu word meaning “mountain” or “head,” and refers to the cape that is just north of Yoichi.

41 Beer Shiripa IPA : Aroma & Taste

41 Beer Shiripa IPA poured out a murky orange brownish colour with a thin amount of white head on top. Apparently the brewer was going for the colour of the sunset that can be seen at Cape Shiripa – let’s hope that the real sunset is much nicer than this beer. The aroma was a peculiar one – a definite metallic aroma to it that reminded me of iron, along with some hoppy lemon but most peculiar was the resounding thought. It didn’t really seem to be a British IPA – with some musty floral hop aroma – and nor did it seem to be an American IPA as it was rather muted.

The body of 41 Beer Shiripa IPA was maltier than the nose and I’m guessing that the brewers themselves are bit confused as to what they were going for. 41 Beer Shiripa IPA never really got going for me – there was some hoppy bitterness at the start of drinking that lingered but once again, the metallic flavour just couldn’t be shook off. Thankfully, there were no off flavours from the yeast but it wasn’t a good beer in the end.

41 Beer Shiripa IPA : The Bottom Line

41 Beer Shiripa IPA does not know what it is trying to be. A wide miss.
