Nomcraft Family Ties by Nomcraft Brewing

Nomcraft Family Ties is a 7% American IPA from Nomcraft Brewing, based in Arisugawa, in Wakayama, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition lineup, and can be found in both bottles and on draught, though its availability at the time of writing means it may be sold out! Sorry, I know I should be drinking and writing more but they seem to go against one another. Nomcraft Family Ties is brewed using Mosaic, Nugget, and Simcoe hops. As for the name, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it links to the three hops being part of the same family with Mosaic being developed when they crossed a female Simcoe (YCR 14) and a Nugget derived male.

Nomcraft Family Ties : Aroma and Taste

Nomcraft Family Ties poured out slightly darker than expected, with a dark orange amber hue to the body, with a thin amount of white head on top. The aroma was hop forward with lots of lemon and grapefruit coming through first, followed by a thick piney resinous aroma that became the dominant aroma. There was just a touch of malt sweetness to the beer that came through too but it was all about the hops. When Nomcraft Family Ties had warmed up some more, then a nice segue into some grape and melon was noted.

The body though was where Nomcraft Family Ties shone the most with the three hops combining together to bring something stronger than if they had been used by themselves. The cacophony of hop flavours was well balanced, with a mixture of grape, grapefruit, lemon, and melon all being noted but the start was the piney resinous flavour that permeated throughout drinking. Of course, there was an initial hop bitterness but that was expected and didn’t last too long. Nomcraft Family Ties finished off with a lingering hop fruity flavour, having me come back for more.

Nomcraft Family Ties : The Bottom Line

I hate it when a brewery brings out a beer like Nomcraft Family Ties as a special release – I want more of it but now I can’t! Get some while you can.
