Kamakura Zaimokuza Coast IPA : Aroma and Taste

It’s not often Kamakura Beer come out with a new beer and I came across this on a random cycling tour around Kanagawa one day. I was genuinely taken aback by it as Kamakura Zaimokuza Coast IPA is actually a new beer rather than a rebranded one with a fancy label to grab your attention.

Kamakura Zaimokuza Coast IPA poured out a hazy dull golden yellow colour, but it is not supposed to be a hazy IPA. It’s supposed to be an American IPA so looks like someone perhaps forgot to filter the beer. In terms of aroma, the hops brought some lemon and grapefruit when the beer was slightly chilled, though some pineapple came through after letting Kamakura Zaimokuza Coast IPA warm up, though it lacked the punch I was expecting from a beer being marketed as using lots of hops.

The body lacked a definite IPA bite, with it being more muted, perhaps better suited to being labelled as a pale ale rather than an IPA. The hop flavour was more of the same as the nose, with lemon and grapefruit, along with just a smidgen of pineapple too. Kamakura Zaimokuza Coast IPA had a subtle biscuity body to it, and while it was generally clean, there was just a little bit of butter diacetyl to the aftertaste.

Kamakura Beach Series?

Kanagawa is famed for its beaches, with Enoshima being one of the most popular areas. However, go down the coast a bit more, perhaps along the Enoden line, and you come across some clean and quiet beaches.

Zaimokuza is one of the beaches and is an easy walk from Yuigahama. So next time you’re in the area, go a bit further down to escape the crowds.

Kamakura Zaimokuza Coast IPA : The Bottom Line

I got excited about Kamakura Zaimokuza Coast IPA as I thought it would be something new, but in the end, it just felt a bit flat and dated.
