Yorocco Black Sword is 7% black IPA / cascadian IPA from Yorocco Beer, based in Ofuna, in Kanagawa, Japan. It’s part of their winter lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap across various places in Japan.
Yorocco Black Sword Aroma and Taste
Yorocco Black Sword poured out a pitch black colour with a medium amount of frothy white head on top that clung to the side of the glass throughout drinking. The aroma coming off though was quite a strong black acrid malt aroma – if you don’t like that sort of thing, then you won’t like Yorocco Black Sword. The hops really only began to cut through (excuse the unintended pun) through the black malt aroma once the beer had warmed up, with some light resinous note and a hint of citrus coming through too.
The black malt once again proved to be quite strong in the body with it dominating over the hop bitterness and flavours too. The light dank and citrus flavours only partially came though the black malts – a shame really as it could have been much nicer. Yorocco Black Sword had a subtle coffee and chocolate aroma too once it had warmed up – a little bit too much going on for a black IPA. The lingering acrid black malt stayed into the aftertaste, needing some water to remove it from the palate.
Yorocco Black Sword The Bottom Line
Reign back the black malts, and bring up the hops in the next version please.
