Numazu Dystopia is a 10% imperial stout from Kakitagawa Brewing, based in Numazu, in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their winter lineup and can be found in both bottles and on tap in select places.
Numazu Dystopia Aroma and Taste
Numazu Dystopia poured out a pitch black colour with a large amount of frothy tan coloured head on top. The head collapsed in on itself to leave a thin oily ring on top of the beer. Numazu Dystopia smelt like your typical imperial stout – thick boozy alcohol aroma with a large amount of coffee and chocolate going on but there was peculiar burnt plastic-like aroma to it – almost petrol-like to it. I’ve never smelt it in a beer before and I had to go ask some brewing friends about this aroma and if it is a “normal” or “expected” aroma in a beer – and it isn’t.
That same burnt plastic aroma and found its way into the body of the beer, leaving a huge burnt flavour on the palate, with the coffee and chocolate flavours unable to hide it. Even the boozy 10% of alcohol couldn’t hide it and in the end it just got stronger as the beer got warmer.
Numazu Dystopia The Bottom Line
Numazu Dystopia faces the curse of so many beers – bad beer bottled or a bottle beer gone bad?
