Fujiyama Hunter’s Kotatsu is a 5% saison from Fujiyama Hunter’s Beer, based in Fujinomiya, in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s part of their limited edition series / winter lineup, but for some reason, was only put into bottles in spring of 2019. Fujiyama Hunter’s Kotatsu is brewed with locally sourced mikans, or Japanese oranges.
Fujiyama Hunter’s Kotatsu Aroma and Taste
Fujiyama Hunter’s Kotatsu poured out a dark hazy amber orange colour with a really thin amount of white head on top that dissipated quickly. There was a slightly dry phenolic yeast aroma to Fujiyama Hunter’s Kotatsu, along with a slight pithy orange aroma to it. Nothing potent or offensive but both the aromas were lacking durability.
The body to Fujiyama Hunter’s Kotatsu was more of the same – nothing too potent nor did it deviate from a base saison style. The mikan brought a slight sour pithy twang to the beer and a light dusting of orange flavour to it. The lightness of the beer would have been perfect for a Japanese summer, so why Fujiyama Hunter’s Beer brought this out in winter / cold spring is beyond me. Fujiyama Hunter’s Kotatsu finished off with faint wishy washing-up liquid flavour to it of orange that didn’t last long.
Fujiyama Hunter’s Kotatsu The Bottom Line
Lose the pithiness and bring Fujiyama Hunter’s Kotatsu out in summer.
