Far Yeast Suginamic Bitter Ale is a 4.5% bitter from Far Yeast Brewing Company, based in Yamanashi, Japan. It’s part of their collaborative series, this time working with Suginami Brewery. At the time of writing, it’s unknown if Far Yeast Suginamic Bitter Ale is a one-off or not.

Far Yeast Suginamic Bitter Ale poured out a hazy orange brown colour with a small amount of pure white head. It didn’t last long mind, instead fading to some bubbles around the edge of the glass. If you’re read our Source of Styles #2: Pale Ale then you know “bitter” and “pale ale” was used interchangeable for a long time – and that’s what Far Yeast Suginamic Bitter Ale reminds me of. A very malt forward nose, with some earthy piney aromas coming off. If you’re expecting some citrusy, then that isn’t going to happen.

The body was more of the same. Malt forward with some earthy, piney flavours coming through. There was a faint hint of bitterness to it but it didn’t really get going. There wasn’t any traditional butteriness that is sometimes associated with English bitters – perhaps a good thing?

Far Yeast Suginamic Bitter Ale The Bottom Line

There’s a reason why English bitters are not that popular – they’re kind of samey and old fashioned. Far Yeast Suginamic Bitter Ale is just that.
